Alexis Franks
Advocate and Tutor
Alexis Franks is a passionate advocate and consultant specializing in early childhood special education. Alexis is a former teacher with the Montgomery County Public Schools System and has taught in a variety of special education settings including resource models and self-contained programming. Alexis brings deep expertise in individualized education program (IEP) development, goal setting, differentiated instruction, and support for students with complex and multiple disabilities.
Alexis is committed to evidence-based, play-centered practices that promote autonomy and engagement in young learners. She works closely with families and schools to coordinate supports across home and educational environments, ensuring each child receives the comprehensive care they need to thrive. Her work focuses on helping families of young children with disabilities navigate the special education system and access inclusive, developmentally appropriate learning experiences.
Alexis holds a Master of Education in Autism and Severe Disabilities from the University of Maryland and a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education, with Distinction, from the University of Delaware. Alexis is certified in Early Childhood and Special Education from Birth-Age 21.

Growing up, I had a best friend and neighbor. His name is Nicol. Nicol has always been a bright light — the kind of person who can fill any room with laughter, curiosity, and joy.
He has a special love for trucks, the color yellow, the movie Dodgeball, and just about any funny joke you can imagine. Even in the face of obstacles, Nicol never failed — and never fails — to show up with a big smile and an even bigger heart. His spirit reminds me every day that brilliance looks different for everyone, and that every child deserves to feel valued, supported, and celebrated for exactly who they are.
Inspired by Nicol’s resilience and light, I founded Bright Like Nicol LLC to help children and families navigating the complex world of special education. Whether it’s tutoring, advocacy, or guidance through the IEP process, our mission is simple: to walk alongside families and empower every learner to shine in their own way.
Here, we believe learning has no one-size-fits-all approach and no limit to what’s possible. We’re here to honor every child’s unique gifts, to champion their progress, and to remind them that just like Nicol, they can light up the world.
